Pianista, compositor y director de orquesta estadounidense de origen alemán. Huyó de la persecución nazi con su familia y en 1939 se trasladó a Los Ángeles. En las décadas de 1940 y 1950 orquestó y arregló música para MGM, y desde entonces hizo música de cine para varios estudios. Entretanto se había convertido en un destacado pianista clásico y de jazz y comenzó a dirigir orquestas. Fue director principal de la orquesta Sinfónica de Houston, la Sinfónica de Londres, la Sinfónica de Pittsburgh, la Filarmónica de Los Ángeles y la Filarmónica Real. También ha compuesto una sinfonía, conciertos y la ópera Un tranvía llamado deseo (1998), así como canciones populares. Fue ordenado caballero en 1996.
